April is Poetry Month – Ready for Our Poem-A-Day Challenge?

Categories: Brian Klems' The Writer's Dig, How to Write Poetry, Writing Poetry Tags: Brian Klems, online editor blog.

Did you know that April is National Poetry Month? I have never considered myself to be a poet, but I’ve learned that writing poetry can be fun. That’s why a couple of years ago I participated in Robert Lee Brewer’s Poem a Day challenge. It was one of the best decisions I ever made as a writer–and I think it’s something you should consider doing too.

Here are the guidelines to Robert’s Poem-A-Day Challenge.

I know it has already started, but you can catch up pretty quickly. To help, I’ve linked (and will continue to link) to each day of the challenge on this blog post. So feel free to bookmark this page to help you find the day that you need:

    THE RIGHT THING*
I walked in for no reason
in particular. I think it was
for a pack of cigarettes, something like
    that. I forget now

what, but you were there. That’s
it. You were waiting in line. I noticed
    how you stood . . . patiently
    as if you had
all the time in the world. So did I

watch everybody cut in front of you
stoic in your blue pleated dress,
a loose fitting long sleeved blouse . . . you
might as well be a nun
on holiday, but I had a feeling

you were on holiday, too, like me. Maybe
if I got to sit beside you. Were you to say no
I’d figure you wanted to be alone. Nevertheless

I learned so much about stuff, from you
    about so much
that I didn’t know. You smile, tell stories
that fill me with hope, recall the places
where I dreamed . . . you pull my insides out

make up for what is lacking, in me, you
    and yours, too,
    a hundred percent together,
filling what is missing. Between us,
    partners, tomorrow and forever.
